Specialty and Vanity Plates
In most countries and states people can register vanity registration and personalized license plate, with custom characters or numbers. For example a personalized plate or a vanity license plate may read 'MY RIDE'. In most countries and states profanities, obscene or offensive words or meanings. Registration is usually available on state DMV office's official website. A driver's license is required for vanity plate registration. These specialized and vanity numbers may incur additional license plate fees, it depends on the plate type. Contact your state Department of Motor Vehicles for more details on registration fee and procedure or check our state pages for fees, official websites and additional details.
Temporary Registration Plates
Some state DMVs now require temporary license plates on newly purchased or leased vehicles. Temporary tags have an expiration, usually it's 90 days (may differ from country to country or state to state). This is usually attached to the driver's license information until the actual vanity plates or regular license plates are issued and shipped.
Why Should I Report Bad Drivers?
According to U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration there are more than 35,000 fatal crashes in United States each year (average based on data from 1960-2017), and there are over 3 million people injured each year. There are more that 270 million vehicles registered in US. Bad drivers continue to break the laws until they are caught and arrested. Local police looks up license plate records to identify offenders, sometimes they may refer to arrest records, license plate check, VIN check details and other sources to pull historical information on lawbreakers. Reporting a bad driver will put them on a lookout and will result in safer driving. In case they are arrested, public records of our website may help investigators to create a compelling case against the offenders.

Is it legal to look up someone's license plate?
It is perfectly legal to run any license plate as it is a matter of public records. But if you are trying to retrieve personally identifiable information (PII), then you should have specific DPPA (Driver's Privacy Protection Act) reasons for it. The permissible use cases are:
- for government agencies;
- in connection with matters of motor vehicle or driver safety and theft;
- in normal course of business to verify the accuracy of information provided by the car owner;
- in connection with any matter before a court or arbitration proceeding;
- in research activities (excluding personal information);
- for insurance purposes;
- for providing notice to owners of towed cars;
- by any licensed private investigative agency or licensed security service;
- by employers to verify commercial driver information as required by U.S. Code Title 49, subtitle VI, chapter 313;
- by private toll transportation facilities;
- for response to requests from departments of motor vehicles;
- bulk distribution for surveys, marketing or solicitations (requires opt-in);
- by written consent of the owner;
- for other reasons (varies by state).

Make your first stop at the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles. There are a number of local offices across the state. Request a form called the Ohio Vehicles Record Request Form. You’ll need to fill out this form, send it back by mail and wait for the BMV to mail you the results. The BMV will use its records to find out the name of the person who owns that vehicle and the address of the registered owner. You also have the option of downloading a copy of the form, filling it out at home and mailing it back to the BMV. The Ohio BMV does not have an online search or look up for license plate numbers.
Ohio License Plate Lookup Online
If you do a simple Google search for license plate look up in Ohio, many of the top sites that you come across are actually private databases. These companies may have listings of license plate numbers and drivers’ information that they place online. While you may have the chance to do a search for free, you must pay for the information you need. A basic search will only let you know if the database found a match. The best thing about using a private database is that you can often view information about the history of that vehicle and its registered owner.
